The University of Galway is seeking ENLIGHT partners to co-develop a new joint master’s degree focused on Media, Platform Governance and Democracy. This transdisciplinary programme will examine how digital technologies, disinformation, and platform monopolies challenge democratic values, and how regulation, ethics, and civic resilience can respond. Galway will coordinate development but seeks partners to develop the joint degree concept. The degree will combine expertise in, inter alia, media, law, politics, and digital governance, and engage with EU regulation (e.g. DSA, EMFA), global south perspectives, and international career pathways.
Democracies are under strain from disinformation, surveillance, algorithmic manipulation and platform power. These forces erode trust, weaken institutions, and distort civic discourse. The University of Galway seeks ENLIGHT Incubator funding to co-develop a joint transdisciplinary master’s programme exploring how European democratic values—pluralism, civic participation, freedom of expression, and the rule of law—can be protected in a contested digital environment. The programme will critically examine EU digital regulation efforts, including the Digital Services Act and European Media Freedom Act, while integrating perspectives from the Global South. It will equip graduates with skills for careers in EU institutions, diplomacy, international media, and civil society. Funding will support co-design of curriculum and governance, staff exchanges, and stakeholder engagement. The result will be a jointly developed academic programme ready for Erasmus Mundus or ENLIGHT calls. We invite ENLIGHT institutions to join us in shaping this innovative response to global democratic challenges.
