International Module Teacher Education 2025

About the course

Content

The course starts with (1) an online pre-programme in which students are introduced to Global Citizenship in education. Subsequently, students from the same university engage in online group discussions about global citizenship challenges their educational system faces. They work out a group video about the educational system in their region and the challenges they face regarding global citizenship.

In a (2) second phase, students physically come together at the University of Groningen (14-18 April) and follow a 5-day on-site programme with a social and academic focus. During these 5 days, students gain insight into the concept of Global Citizenship through the method of Challenge-based education. Concretely, students participate in group assignments and workshops, attend guest lectures on Global Citizenship, participate in a socio-cultural activity, and a school-visit that currently faces (and tackles) issues in the field of Global Citizenship.

In a (3) third phase, students write a short reflection report of about 2 pages, reflecting on what they have learned during their 5-day on-site stay at the University of Groningen.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the module, student teachers prove to be able and willing to:

I. Acquire knowledge about Global citizenship

  • Acquire, construct and share knowledge on issues of global/European citizenship from an interdisciplinary perspective (by applying CBL)
  • Identify/recognize national and/or regional challenges as manifestations of global/European citizenship (problems/issues)
  • Demonstrate critical engagement with related theories and research of Global citizenship

II. Master skills to understand global citizenship and take action

  • Reflect on their future role as a teacher and the opportunities provided in their school subject with regard to preparing pupils for European/global citizenship

Programme

Assessment

Formal assessment of learning outcomes:

I. On-site collective assessment

Potential deliverables described in the poster: policy/advice, research proposal, presentation, lesson plan...
  • Evaluation by the coaches/educational support staff (PhD students, ...)

II. Individual assessment based on online reflection

  • Reflection report: students write a reflection report of about 2 pages in which they reflect on what they have learned on global citizenship through CBE during their 5-day on-site stay at the University of Groningen.
