This month, University of Galway was designated as a national Sustainable Development Goals Champion for 2023-24 by the Government of Ireland – the first time a university has received the status. The designation recognises the leading role universities play in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
The role of an SDG Champion is to raise public awareness of the SDGs and act as a good practice example of how an organisation can contribute to and integrate the SDGs into their work and activities. We join 21 other SDG Champions across Ireland and in many sectors including sport, media, business, transport, community groups and public services. They are some of Ireland’s best known organisations, including GAA, Tesco, Irish Rail, An Post and the Football Association of Ireland.
Our University is ranked Number 1 in Ireland and among the Top 50 in the World by Times Higher Education for our impact towards the SDGs. Our researchers have developed a global reputation for medtech, marine and environmental research, sustainable energy solutions, data analytics, culture and creativity, all having an important role to play in the implementation of the SDGs.
This designation as SDG Champion 2023-24 is our opportunity to share our positive impact with the world. We know that the challenges that face our people and planet are urgent, and that they will need shared solutions.
