An international team, including the Ikerbasque research professor of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and associate of  Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) Tom Broadhurst, used the high resolution of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) combined with a powerful gravitational lens to conclude that the galaxies that formed in the early universe were typically very small, indicating a hierarchical process of evolution from dwarf galaxies gradually merging together as a result of mutual gravity, until massive galaxies such as our Milky Way were formed. The study has just been published in the journal Science.

On 10 May 2023 at 13.00 CET, the ‘EDLab’ consortium organizes a webinar presenting its project as well as the context for the joint European degree initiative. This is the first webinar to be organized in a series of webinars to follow on topics related to joint programmes. 

The ENLIGHT Teacher Education Network developed an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) on global citizenship in European classrooms. A BIP is a short, intensive programme that uses innovative ways of learning and teaching, including the use of online cooperation. During the last week of April, 45 students and 12 PhD student coaches from all 9 ENLIGHT partners investigated global citizenship in European classrooms. They used the principles of challenge-based education and worked on concrete topics like multilingualism, trauma background immigrant pupils, diversity, inclusion, gender and sexual orientation, religion… The result: tons of enthusiasm, ideas and concrete recommendation and tips for future teachers!

On 26 May the University Museum Groningen will open the exhibition PHALLUS. Norm & Form. The exhibition, which was developed by the GUM (Ghent University Museum), takes the visitor on a journey across our ideas on sex, gender, science, and norms. Through art and science our gaze shall be directed towards the nether regions.

Comenius University Bratislava invites to an online lecture on 4 May 2023 from 9.20 to 11.00 CEST by PHARMDr. ANNA OLEÁROVÁ, PhD., MPH from University Hospital in Bratislava. Aim group of this lecture are students and academics from medicine and pharmacy.

The first lecture of this semester, "AI & its Impact on Teaching & Learning", will be livestreamed online on May 10th at 3 pm CET. This lecture is part of the European Universities Week.

On 20 April, the 292-member electoral council elected Professor of Neurosurgery Toomas Asser as rector of the University of Tartu with 168 votes. The electoral council comprised members of the University of Tartu council, the senate, faculty councils and the student union, as well as professors.  

 Invitation to Virtual Exchange training in the ENLIGHT network 

The ENLIGHT network invites to a series of three events on Virtual Exchange (VE). 

Firstly, a workshop will introduce virtual exchange and its benefits to intercultural collaboration, secondly, a partnering fair will assist interested academics in finding VE partners within the ENLIGHT network, and finally, a tailored training will be provided for those who have defined their goals to jointly develop a VE together with their partner.  
Participation is free of charge, and one person can either take part in one or several of the mentioned events. Registration is open for each session separately.  All sessions are organised in cooperation with UNIcollaboration, a cross-disciplinary professional organisation for telecollaboration and VE in Higher Education. 

On 11 April the ENLIGHT Student Network hosted a meeting on Quality Assurance in Education, bringing together representatives from different central student representational bodies across ENLIGHT.

Each representative gave a brief presentation on their organization and university, focusing especially on how quality assurance in education works. Following the presentations, a joint discussion on the topic was held.

Organised by the University of the Basque Country on 30-31 March 2023, the first ENLIGHT Impact Conference brought together 150 international experts from all over Europe to exchange and discuss approaches for impact assessment and for embedding impact within universities’ full spectrum of activities, being in education, in research, in innovation or in societal engagement related activities.
