Intercultural Competence through Games and Play
In this 3-week online course you will examine culture and intercultural communication through interactive games and role-play. It is open for students of all faculties and levels of education with an interest in cultural exchange, playful learning and developing intercultural competence.

About the course
Content
This course is for you if you have a curiosity to learn about culture and cultural exchange and an interest in play. You will explore aspects of culture, including your own, and build intercultural competence through engaging in interactive and game based methods. The self-paced assignments are designed to deepen your understanding of intercultural competence and reflect on your learning from the online sessions. In your interdisciplinary, intercultural group of students within the ENLIGHT consortium you will explore how culture influences perception and patterns of behaviour, practice your intercultural communication skills and broaden your intercultural competence.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, participants will be able to
- identify, compare and contrast aspects of culture, and explain and reflect influences of culture on perception and behaviour.
- examine the values of cultural diversity, including one´s own.
- practice your intercultural communication skills for culturally sensitive interaction.
- demonstrate and reflect your intercultural competence through portfolio.

Teaching methods
- 90- min. synchronous video sessions
- two self-paced learning assignments, one online discussion
Assessment method(s)
Form of assessment: Reflective portfolio (15 pages max.)
Timing for assessment: Submission of reflection portfolio until October 30, 2026
Further requirements for assessment: Active participation in synchronous sessions, self-paced assignments and online discussion forum

7 synchronous online video session: Wednesday/Monday/Friday,12:15 – 13:45 (CET).
Regular participation required (missing one at most). Teaching and learning materials available 24/7 on StudIP/UGOE.
How to apply?
Entry requirements: none
Students from all ENLIGHT partner universities are eligible to participate. Students who meet the requirements mentioned above apply directly to the host university through Application link. Before applying, students should check with their home faculty or programme whether the course can be included in their curriculum and whether the credits will be recognised. Students from Ghent University must obtain faculty approval by completing this form and having it signed by the Faculty Student Administration.
The host university will select the permitted number of students, inform the students as soon as possible following the application deadline. Selection of course participants will be based on available course capacities. Selection will refer to a “first come first serve” principle across partner universities, i. e. the first applications from each university will be selected to increase diversity in the course. Unsuccessful students will be placed on a waiting list and may get a place in case of drop outs at a later stage but not later than the official beginning of the course.
Students will receive a Transcript of Records following successful completion.
